Meniscectomy

The moment you have torn your meniscus during sports or in daily life, you can opt for a meniscectomy. This process runs through the orthopedist who determines whether you qualify for this. Below you will find the trajectory that you can follow after the operation.

Phase 1 of recovery - Week 1-2

Learning to walk with crutches, improving knee mobility.

1. Actieve quadriceps in lig m. vastus medialis

12x • 3 sets

3. Standing Palov press

12x • 3 sets

Position your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold the resistance band and push both arms straight out in front of you. You will feel the need to engage your abdominal muscles due to the resistance of the band. Ensure your pelvis is tilted (tip: pull in your belly button).

4. Standing squat

12x • 3 sets

Place your feet shoulder-width apart. Pretend you are about to sit on a bench and perform a squat. Make sure your knees do not extend beyond your toes.

Phase 2 of recovery - week 2-6

Extend to full knee mobility, improve stability and strength of the knee.

1. Air squat met elastiek

15x • 3 sets

2. Fire hydrant

12x • 3 sets

Stand upright with a resistance band just above your knees and your hands on your hips. Now lift one leg off the ground while simultaneously rotating your knee outward. Return to the starting position.

3. Isometric deadbug

12x • 3 sets

Place a resistance band around your forefeet and lie on your back with your hips and knees both bent at 90 degrees. Extend one leg while keeping tension on the band. Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side.

4. Gluteus medius walk

20x • 3 sets

5. Hip bridge on a ball

12x • 3 sets

Rest your shoulders on a ball. Position your feet close to the raised surface, then lift your buttocks all the way up; repeat the movement.

6. TRX Lunge achterwaarts met kniehef

15x • 3 sets

Phase 3 of recovery - week 6-8

Return to sport

1. Single-leg squat

15x • 3 sets

Stand with your feet hip-width apart in front of a bench or chair, then lift one leg off the ground; slowly lower yourself into a seated position on that single leg, and then stand back up using that same leg.

2. Jumping squat

12x • 3 sets

3. Single leg box jump

12x • 3 sets

Stand on one leg in front of a box, lower yourself by bending your knee, and jump onto the box. Then, step down calmly.

4. One leg Hamstring curl

12x • 3 sets

What is an meniscectomy?

There are 2 half moon shaped pieces of cartilage (menisci) inside your knee joint. They are important to keep the joint functioning smoothly. They also provide a dampening effect like shock absorbers. When making an uncoordinated movement, usually a twisting movement, you can cause a meniscus to tear. This can be addressed surgically, where the torn part will be removed.

The causes of a meniscectomy

A meniscal tear can occur due to a trauma or wrong movement, for instance while playing sports. Often it occurs during a turning movement of the body while the foot remains planted on the ground. It is a common injury in netball, soccer, field hockey, rugby, american football and skiing.

The symptoms of a meniscectomy

Immediately after a meniscal tear the knee may swell a little. There can be pain on either side of the knee. Bending or fully extending the knee can be painful and sometimes impossible. Sometimes the knee “locks”, when the torn meniscus is trapped between the bones of the knee.

The treatment of a meniscectomy

During the operation the surgeon can remove part of the meniscus (partial meniscectomy) or remove it entirely (full meniscectomy). A small shaving device is used during a partial meniscectomy to remove the damaged material. Depending on the size of the tear, the location and what side of the knee the tear occured, rehabilitation will take between 4 weeks up to 9 months. Rehabilitation will be focused on mobility and load capacity of the knee.

Phases of recovery

Phase 1 - Reduce inflammation and increase mobility
Phase 2 - Muscle strengthening of the kinetic chain
Phase 3 - Return to sport

Synonyms

Meniscal tear, unhappy triad, meniscal damage, torn meniscus
