The Lungs
The lungs consist of lobes, every lobe is functionally a separate lung with its own windpipe, lung vein and artery. The right lung has three lobes (superior, medial and inferior lobes). The left lung has two lobes (superior and inferior lobes). The two most common lung diseases are COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and asthma. COPD is the third leading cause of death in the world.
What are COPD and asthma?
Asthma is a persistent inflammation of the lungs. The branches of the trachea (windpipe) known as bronchi are mildly inflamed. This causes the bronchi to become easily irritated by pollen, smoke or physical exertion. The muscles of the bronchi contract when irritated, making the tubes more narrow and more sputum is produced. This will make you feel breathless and may cause coughing.
COPD works slightly differently. COPD is the combined name of two lung diseases. The first disease presents like asthma but the inflammation is chronic (chronic bronchitis). This means the bronchi are always narrowed and there is always excess sputum production. The second disease affects the air space of the lungs (alveoli). The alveoli allow the exchange of gasses with the blood (perfusion). When damaged (emphysema), not enough oxygen can be absorbed in your blood (hypoxia).
The causes of COPD and asthma
Asthma is often hereditary. If one or both parents have asthma, there is a high chance the child will develop it as well. Smoking is the main cause of COPD. Poor air quality or exposure to toxic gasses can also cause COPD.
The symptoms of COPD and asthma
In both diseases excess sputum production and shortness of breath are common. With asthma these are usually episodes of shortness of breath (asthma attack). Wheezing and coughing can also occur.
With COPD shortness of breath is often present. This can be combined with periods of rapid breathing and coughing up sputum. Fatigue is very common in COPD sufferers. This is caused by the labored breathing that requires a lot of energy. This leads to reduced stamina and muscle strength.
The treatment of COPD and asthma
Asthma is well controlled with medications. Additionally, avoiding aggravating triggers can help to prevent attacks. COPD is harder to control with medication alone. Lifestyle changes are important to prevent deterioration. It is recommended to stop smoking, avoid airborne pollutants or toxic gasses and stay active. Staying active can help to increase lung capacity. The physiotherapist can help to optimize your management strategies.
